Herbert Giles was in the diplomatic service in China from 1867 to 1893. His frank observations on Chinese culture and people form the basis of these short essays, published in 1876. I am a Vietnamese and Vietnamese culture is not much different from the Chinese. The country of China colonization of the country of Vietnam for thousand of years. Vietnamese even adopted the Chinese language until 1700 centuries when the French came colonized Vietnam and created the modern alphabetical language that the Vietnamese using today. so pretty much the Vietnamese people are adopted many if not all traditions from the Chinese. After listened to this very interesting book i realized many of the barbaric traditions still alive and well , that the Vietnamese are still practicing today that including religions!

Very interesting

Fascinating British Victorian study of Chinese culture and society, and unexpectedly positive and compassionate given the historical context of Western colonialism and its accompanying racist ideology of that age. Thanks to this book, the erroneous Western propaganda on China and its people have been swept away. What is portrayed with respect is a civilized society of law and order, whose citizens are enterprising and hardworking. The reader, MaryAnn, is excellent as always. Thank you

excelente

um livro que retrata de forma clara as realidades chinesas e as profundas crenças e costumes nas vidas das mulheres de outros tempos. mas é importante relembrar que apesar de "não existirem hoje", ainda presitem estas crenças familiares milenares.

Typical racist garbage that white people love to produce. This rubbish (and other similar writings on non-white people) will give you an invaluable insight into the narcissistic sociopathic psychopathy of a people that were only invented 1500 years ago.
