Delighted

I have tried free audio books online before and been disappointed by the poor quality of reading. Yet, in my search for an audio version of Phantastes I found Brad Powers' recording here. Power's tone and quality of voice embodied the fairy nature of this book. In regards to the book itself, how can one go wrong with one of the books that most impacted C.S. Lewis!

Thank You Brad Powers

I am a huge fan of George MacDonald and Phantastes is one of my favorite works of fantasy. What an absolute delight to listen to the story read by an individual with such a wonderful voice. Thank you Brad Powers for a truly memorable reading.

Simply Beautiful

This is the fourth George MacDonald book I have had the pleasure of listening to. It is deeply stirring, emotionally resonant and inspiring. The prose is beautiful. The verse is delightful. The journey is soulful. My biggest issue is the subtitle is slightly misleading. It is a romance of the soul, where the Faerie land setting is a window into the self and soul and the romance is directed toward life itself, or rather the source of life. Though perhaps, MacDonald is using "Romance" in the archaic sense, which would alter my critique. I love this book. I will recommend it to others.

Not for me

The comments, the description and the beginning of this novel had me eager to complete it but I was quickly disappointed. The narrative was simple, if not pedantic. Things just kind of happen and rather than demonstrating character growth, or hiding themes and lessons in the story, we’re simply outright told that the character is now changed. Maybe I didn’t get it maybe I missed the point or maybe it just wasn’t for me. 5/10 wouldn’t recommend.
