My daughter is now an English academic. As a child she was steeped in Austen and Harry Potter but I always had my doubts about the former empire, so brutally hypocritical about its supposed superiority. Henry James exposed the English upper class marriage mart in a novella called Lady Barbarina. Trollope’s take on the next level down is only slightly less brutal. By comparison Lizzy Bennet’s mother is a barrel of laughs. You can’t blame a woman with five impecunious daughters. But threatening breach of promise is no joke. Fine reading.
One of Trollope's best...

...and not just because it's short! His novels can be work to read, and worth the effort. But in 'Alice Dugdale' he concentrates his wit and penetration and I, at least, smile and laugh in a quicker rhythm. Thanks to Anthony Ogus, for another fine reading.

A pleasant little book - very much like Trollope’s other books. But if you want a light book and not too complicated, this is for you.
An easy listen from Anthony Trollope
