As a long time devotee of the McLevy series my friends and family would assert that, ‘one is incapable of writing an impartial review of the same’. That said, I am happy to criticise when necessary, But to do that to one has to listen, listen and listen again to any drama, I’m happy to say I have listened oftentimes to every McLevy episode. Set in Edinburgh around 1860 most all the central characters are based on real life people; from Inspector McLevy (whose memoirs heavily influenced writer David Ashton) Ashton also plays Lieutenant Roach, McLevy’s superior. Constable Mulholland a real life policeman at the same time as Inspector McLevy and Jean Brash another historical figure, Brash did run The Happy Land (a House Of iII Repute and she was also a notorious criminal) in real life Brash often outsmarted Scotland’s very first and at the time best, Inspector of crimes. McLevy IRL was a, cause celebre’ often being sought by the highest in the land, in addition it he is often cited as being a friend and ‘influencer’ of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes. In many ways it is surprising given the interest in Edgar Allan Poe, Conan Doyle etc, that McLevy is not the household name he is worthy of being. Who knows what the future holds, I’m confident that should some Hollywood film company come calling on David Ashton then, McLevy could become as successful a franchise as Sherlock Holmes, or Bourne. In the meantime I Highly Commend Every Episode Of McLevy For Your Listening Pleasure
wonderful BBC radio at its best

Canute and the tide
I love Mclevy, and I’m a huge fan of Brian Cox. However I’ve struggled to purchase audiobooks of the series, so finding it free on librivox was a joy. The series is gritty, emotional and atmospheric, yet at the same time also funny and entertaining. Great character development and historically accurate. Brilliant. Inspector Stein by Lyn Truss is also available-anarchic humour, and darn good too.
