I read this first in the 60's about 30 years after its publication, around the time of the Great Crash. It influenced my view of good and evil in the world. One could either serve higher ideals or not. The idea of sacrifice being necessary sometimes The idea of vigilante justice when all else fails Certain things were simply 'beyond the pale'. https://wordpress.com/post/nickweechblog.wordpress.com/1320
