A more in depth autobiography than “The Narrative Life of Fredrick Douglas -a slave” written 10 years prior. The setting and characters are developed throughout. The description of enslavement from this first person account captures the inhumane and treacherous conditions endured by the author and many others under similar conditions. A must read for anyone seeking to develop a better understanding of America’s brutal legacy of disgraceful treatment of African Americans.
Karin Lyle

Compelling, well-written story of the life of a brilliant man.
