As one of the pioneers of Gothic fiction, this classic novel is seriously underrated. The story revolves around Ambrosio, the abbot, who is the epitome of a devout monk to the world, but in reality is the embodiment of lust and debauchery. I find the reader hard to follow...the first version much easier to follow
