Honoré de Balzac

One of Balzac's most popular works, set around 1815 during the re-ascendancy of the Bourbon kings following the defeat of Napoleon. Said to have been an inspiration to Charles Dickens and Henry James as well as others, the novel seeks to portray the realism of scenes and people. It is also a commentary upon the changing social strata and mores of the day. (Summary by JCarson) (11 hr 44 min)

It took some time to become accustomed to the reader’s voice and delivery, but he does a very good job of conveying the emotional weight and drama. Listening through this recording was a thrilling, at times humorous, and deeply affecting experience. I appreciate the sustained commitment of a single reader presenting a lengthy work.
A classic for a reason

Really great book and I appreciate the work of LibriVox volunteers. Respectfully though, the narrator was terrible. I almost gave up several times and I would never listen to this version again.
Great story really engaging. Brilliant character portrayal
