Critiques

Excellent series - Alan Ladd was exceptional..

(5 étoiles)

I caught a few epsidoes of "Box 13" on the 24 / 7 streaming OTR station, Antioch 1710, and came here to snag the entire series.. The good parts - the plots are excellent.. very well-written.. despite being famous for his film work, despite being only 5'6" tall, the handsome, blonde Ladd had an excellent baritone radio voice, perfect timing, and never flubs a line.. most episodes are book-endeded with some witty repartee between his character, Dan Holliday, and his cute (well, we can only imagine her as cute) but dumb (in a charmingly silly way) secretary, Suzie.. No commercials in any of the episodes.. the theme music and scoring are top-notch.. The bad - there are only 52 episodes spanning 1948 - 1949.. Ladd tragically ended his own life.. These half-hour shows move very quickly, and often have fairly convoluted plots, so one has to pay attention while listening, unless you want to "re-wind" a lot.. Highly-recommended, if you like fast-moving detective / mystery OTR.. in a way, Ladd's savvy character reminds me of Bob Bailey's "Johnny Dollar", but with one glaring difference - Johnny knew every trick in the book to pad his expense account.. Dan Holliday refuses to take a cent from anyone, as his "go anywhere, do anything" adventures were just fodder to get ideas for the mystery books he wrote..

Great stuff for any fan of old time radio

I'm only in my twenties, but I grew up with old-time radio shows coming over the AM band in the middle of the night, and this show is possibly better than any of the ones I grew up on. With the exception of the annoying intro, a harsh female voice repeating the title over and over there are few flaws, and the recording quality on all but a few of these is top notch. If you like good detective stories with charasmatic leads and a touch of humor, this is for you.

Alan Ladd Did Very Well In Box 13

(5 étoiles)

This was one of my childhood family's favorite radio programs when it was originally broadcast. The plots hold up very well after 60 years. Alan Ladd did well in these Box 13 programs. He was a frequent star in other radio programs at the time such as the Lux Radio Theater. He had an excellent voice and delivery. Alan Ladd was a favorite in the movies of the 1940's and 1950's.

Alan Ladd was great in this series and had a great radio voice. Every mystery was a hoot and the show gradually improved! I like that Susie got a running joke as the series went along, and it only got better! I am sorry that it had to end! No audio complaints! Thanks to all who put it on here! I loved it very much.

great stumble-on

I'm like a few other reviewers here in that I grew up in the 90 and 00s listening to OTR on late night AM stations. This is easily my favorite adventure series. In the vein of Johnny Dollar, but Ladd is considerably more believable and likable. Have an audio-crush on Suzie. Great show. Wish there were more eps though.

highly enjoyable detective stuff

In another variation on a much used theme the hero is a writer who seeks his muse from requests in his po box 13 when he turns into the detective. New to me in the UK but highly enjoyable. If you like this type of radio show you will not be disappointed,

this is a great show, not as good as Suspense but in the same theme. The stories are enjoyable and they move at a face pace. Ladd voice is smooth making it easy listening.

I liked Allan Ladd very much as Moviestar, but I like him even more as Dan Hollyday. He has a wonderfull voice and the stories are stunning. E.R. from Austria
