Critiques

I Like the 30 Minute Shows with Exceptions.

(4 étoiles)

The exceptions are the audio quality. It varies from muffled to overly bright at times. When its overly bright I can hear the groove noise from the production cue records. It is far better to hear the 30 minute versions than the series, which stretched and convoluted the plot. Also the 30 minute versions are take place in different cities mentioning hotels, roads and other landmarks. Thanks so very, very much for keeping radio programs alive. I love the theme music with the large orchestra including harp and French horns. Someone told me the production music was recorded in France, but I can find no verification for it. I believe these are from the MUTEL production library. Thanks again!

A must-hear!

Johnny Dollar, the "fabulous freelance insurance investigator" with the "action-packed expense account" is, in my opinion, one of the better detective-genre radio shows to come out of the golden age of radio. Bob Bailey took over as the voice of Johnny Dollar in the later seasons, and brought an enigmatic mix of rogue and straight arrow to the character that makes him one of the more interesting detectives to come out of the genre. The shows on this page are pretty good, although it's clear that they've been a little bit "touched" by the show's success, so that they can seem on the cheesy side. For a first-time Johnny Dollar listener, I'd recommend the radio shows on page 3, which are serials that tell each story in five parts, allowing greater depth of character development and really showing off Bailey's nuanced character.

Enjoyable shows, but quite a few of these shows do not play

I find I am having trouble playing the 30 minute episiodes on page 4. The ones I do play are quite good however

A quite good series - these not the best

(3 étoiles)

As another reviewer said, while the series is very good - especially the Bob Baily episodes, by the time you get to the shows on this page, they were rather formulaic. That should be no surprise - they did a lot of shows, and there's only so many ways you can jigger the same material. Still, these would be OK for an occasional listen, although I wouldn't listen to one after another. Do a search for an episode guide, and start at the first Bailey episodes. When you've gone through them, come back to this page.

Mandel Kramer - THE BEST Johnny Dollar (IMO)

Thats just my opinion. He was the last JD but in my opinion I LIKED him more than any other.

I use a USB drive with several different programs in my car audio. I set it on random play so it is a little like listening to radio in the old days. Johnny dollar is one of the programs I have a lot of so it pops up every 3 or 4 shows :-)
