Campaigning With Grant

(4.7 stars; 23 reviews)

In the last year of the American Civil War, Horace Porter served as aide-de-camp to General Ulysses S. Grant, then commander of all the armies of the North. This lively 1897 memoir was written from the extensive notes he took during that time. It is highly regarded by later historians. Porter continued in that position with Grant to 1869. From 1869 to 1872 he served Grant as personal secretary in the White House. He was U.S. ambassador to France from 1897-1905. ( David Wales) (15 hr 54 min)

Reseñas

A Classic, Well Read

(5 stars)

I have had a paper copy of Porter's book for some time, and next to Grant's own excellent memoirs, it stands as a classic study of Grant in the Civil War's last year by a man who was there. Well-written, full of colorful and trenchant observations of Grant, his officers and army, it is also well-read by the narrator, though I found it flowed best at a slightly faster speed setting than the original reading. If you are a history buff, Grant fan, or student of the Civil War, this work is worth your while.

(5 stars)

Very clean and well written perhaps not best as a first or second Civil War book but excellent for those who know some of the history and politics of the conflict. Extremely well read as is everything by David Wales.
