The Crown Of Life
George Gissing
Lu par LibriVox Volunteers

So what is the crown of life? Follow the journey of Piers and Irene as they attempt to discover. It is both a coming of age novel and love story at the same time, one which would bring delight to philosophers with many conversations for and against imperialism, romantics who would follow the long courtship in the center of the plot, and sociologists who would follow with interest the vivid way in which George Gissing describes the society in which he lived. - Summary by Stav Nisser. Critiques
Too long and boring

JaneC
The readers did a good job, but I couldn't enjoy the story. It is unreasonably long, full of unnecessary details and descriptions. The love story is not captivating at all. I didn't understand the MC's love first for Irene, then for Olga, then again for Irene. Not romantic. An average book of you like such kind of literature, but not at all my favourite.
Better Than Expected

The novel was better than the reviews promised. I think it offers some of the best examples of late Victorian British empire imperialist ideology in Arnold Jacks and even the minor character of March. Piers and Irene ultimately reject that ideology, but they are clearly of the minority opinion. Not my favorite Gissing novel, but a good one.

First reader holding microphone too close to her mouth so her voice was muffled and therefore couldn’t understand what she was saying. I am a great fan of George Gissing’s works so am quite disappointed not able to listen to this one.
