Saw It Coming

(4 stars)

I suppose in our times, it's harder to pull the wool over a reader's eyes. Either that, or I'm a cynic. :) I saw the resolution to the mystery fairly early, although I hated for it to happen that way. The story is worth the listen, though. The reader may sound mechanical to some listeners' ears, but I enjoyed her reading. You can hear her enjoying the story as it unfolds. And you can understand every word of the story, unlike some readers who slur words together such that you miss out on them. And she handles the French wonderfully! Thank you for this reading, Celine!

Original plot

(5 stars)

At least it's original to me. I don't think guessing who was responsible for Robert's murder is a problem. In fact it intensifies the tension. Braddon's characters are well drawn and develop as events unfold. She also shows at times a delicious/malicious sense of humour. The goody two shoes lives Braddon describes that women were expected to lead must have been ghastly.

Another misspelling . . .

Topics terms - should be "fiction"! Somebody needs to check these things! (LOL - 'Tpyo' Fixed; thank you for the correction. :))

Didn't like the story

(3 stars)

Great reader and well written, but the ending was not sunshiney and happy (to me). Not going on my re-reading list.

mechanical

(3 stars)

The reader even starts out saying ay ("a") and thee ("the") as well as over pronouncing t's. Less than interesting phrasing and expression.

Oh this is awfully long! The characters are not that likable, but I did get through it. This novel really needed editing.
