After the Great War (WW1) and the 1918 influenza pandemic, there was a resurgence of interest in all things spiritual, especially communication with the dead. This book explores the possibility of the dead returning to guide the living in the battle between good and evil. It's also a good story with some delicious characters and a wonderful sense of place. Deserves to be a classic.
