Army Life in a Black Regiment

(4.7 stars; 18 reviews)

These pages record some of the adventures of the First South Carolina Volunteers, the first slave regiment mustered into the service of the United States during the late civil war. It was, indeed, the first colored regiment of any kind so mustered, except a portion of the troops raised by Major-General Butler at New Orleans. These scarcely belonged to the same class, however, being recruited from the free colored population of that city, a comparatively self-reliant and educated race. (From the text) (8 hr 39 min)

Very informative Civil War story

(5 stars)

Even though I tried to give this book 5 stars the application kept changing it to 4.5. I enjoyed every minute of this book. The reader was articulate and his timing was perfect. I thoroughly enjoy hearing a man read a book that was written in the first person by a man. Nevermind that this volume is aged. It is as though the reader could also be the writer and is just telling me the story first hand. I can get lost in a reading such as this one.

Insightful View from a soldier perspective.

I enjoyed the Narrative from the first person point of view.

AN EYE OPENER.

I FOUND THIS BOOK MOST INTERESTING, SO MANY PEOPLE ARE NOT AWARE OF THE CRUELTY SOME GOVERNMENTS CAN INFLICT ON INNOCENT PEOPLE. I WISH A WHITE SYMPATHISER WOULD GET ONE OF THESE BIG WIGS....BECAUSE THEY STILL EXIST THESE DAYS....BLACKEN THEIR SKIN AND WALK THEM THROUGH THOSE PARTS WHERE PEOPLE ARE PREJUDICED AND SEE HOW THEY FEEL. I AM WHITE BY BIRTH, BUT FEEL FOR THOSE NOT BEING THAT FORTUNATE AND HAVE HAD TO SUFFER.

firstly great job by the narrator, and I love the sound effects at the beginning. Interesting to hear a story Of the civil was from a different angle. I think it would make a good movie.

Plesant listen, worth the time

(4.5 stars)

Very pleasant listen, well written and exceptionally well read. I enjoy the authors pride in his men a common belief his men are better than any other men regardless of color.

Written by abolitionist

Seems before its time, with praise of the black race's many fine traits; sincere, not laying it on too thick. Doesn't hit false notes must be unusual, I'm very much afraid.

good, timely, first hand account of civil war army life.

An indispensable history. I understand better the abolitionist.
