Burns & Allen---Classic Radio: The "Gracie for President" Stunt
CBS Radio
All twelve episodes of The Hinds Honey & Almond Cream Program Starring George Burns & Gracie Allen, where America's favorite illogical logician runs for President during the mid-1940s. Gracie's unique take on issues, including her humorous misunderstanding of the Lend-Lease Bill, adds to the charm of this classic radio series.
The gag originated when Burns & Allen's writers, including George Burns himself, brainstormed ideas to revitalize the show. The suggestion to run Gracie for office evolved into a full-blown campaign, complete with broadcasts from a Union Pacific whistlestop train. Gracie's quirky campaign speeches even caught the attention of Eleanor Roosevelt, who invited her to speak at the National Women's Press Club convention.
This series is still celebrated as one of the greatest gags in old-time radio comedy history, showcasing the cleverness and humor that made Burns & Allen a beloved duo.
