The Destruction Factor is a thrilling six-part sci-fi drama by James Follett, first broadcast on BBC 7. The story revolves around the development of a new plant species designed to combat famine in Third World countries. However, this seemingly innocent plant, known as the Exon strain, harbors a dangerous secret—the Destruction Factor.

As the narrative unfolds, we follow Ralph Exon, a scientist working for an international fertilizer corporation, who hopes his creation will bring relief to those in need. But as the plant grows rapidly, chaos ensues, leading to unforeseen consequences that threaten lives and the environment.

Featuring a talented cast including TP McKenna, Rosalind Adams, and Paul Copley, The Destruction Factor explores the ethical dilemmas of scientific advancement and the potential perils of playing with nature.

Superb Radio Play

Absolutely loved it. Another great by James Follet. However, there’s a factual error in the description. This play did not first screen on radio in 2003, rather its first screening was in 1978. There a multitude of references for this on the internet, including Amazon who sell the licensed copy of thus radio drama. This makes much more sense as the 1970’s was the time Mr Follett was most prolific with his writing for novels, Television and Radio.

Excellent prescient environmental drama

Produced so long ago yet so predictive of the potential dangers of biological genetic manipulation. Dated yet well done engrossing suspenseful drama that was a joy to listen to. This audio play is available multiple times on archive.org
