Incredible book, incredible author. Wondering why the author is not well known.

Amazing story from such a gifted Storyteller.

This book encouraged me a lot. It was an instrument that drew me nearer to God. I would recommend listening to it.

Pretty Good

The story: I have really enjoyed a few George MacDonald books I have read. This one was pretty slow but pretty enjoyable overall. I liked the romanticized descriptions of books in the first part of the book. The Narrator: I'll admit, he's not the best. If this weren't a book by one of my favorite authors, I probably would have stopped before the end of the first chapter because the reader is just so quiet. Since I love George MacDonald I went and bought some sound-cancelling ear buds and went ahead with this book. I'm glad I did because I liked the story, but the reader was mediocre at best. The audio itself seems to be too quiet. Overall, I'm happy I listened to this book.

Technical issues

(3.5 stars)

I applaud the narrator's courage in reading this challenging book, with its Scots dialects and German, Middle English, and French quotations at the beginning of the chapters. I do wish that there was more continuity of volume and control of echo and background noise in the recording. That being said, it isn't one of my favorite MacDonald books. It slips too much toward the gothic with accounts of "animal magnetism" and a haunted house. Still, the characters are interesting and McDonald's sly portrayal of the grocer's family is pretty funny.

Very good book

This book is very good - you end up loving all the characters. The reader is certainly a novice, but improves over the course of the book. So glad I persisted in spite of the awkwardness at the beginning.

Hard One. Novice reader.

This book has a lot of Scottish dialects which makes it hard to read and understand. The reader has a pleasant voice but you can tell he is a novice. He had lots of pronunciation problems with big words and a few times I could hear sniffling sounds. These little distractions did not bother me too much. I appreciate the reader's effort. Thank You.
