Twelve-year-old Winter Kelland is an orphan indentured to a cold, harsh farming couple. His one bright spot is eight-year-old Vine, a neighbor girl who believes he can do great things if he can get an education. Win finally has enough of the hard life at the farm and runs away. But he discovers that even his poor life at the farm was desirable to being a half-starved tramp. At his lowest, he encounters a prickly spinster who learns to follow God's command, "He that honoreth Him hath mercy on the poor." The title, Eighty Seven, refers to the year Vine will turn 22 years old and will have a grand birthday feast, and is a tribute to her Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle (CLSC) graduating class of 1887. excellent Read!

Another quality read by ?Pansy. Thanks to TriciaG who keeps them coming!

Pansy Fine Tuning the Christian walk

(5 Sterne)

many Pansy books emphasize the salvation story foremost and this one does as well. BUT this time a strong emphasis is on that Walk AFTER we make a profession of faith. " if I believe, then I should do thus and such". We see both how our failings affect others around us as how we can not let the failings of another affect OUR walk. I see myself in too many characters in these pages.

(4 Sterne)

From the context, the setting seems to be the initial Chautauqua summer program and associated mail-order educational programs. For some reason, the names and any other identifying information have been omitted. (? legal issues?) Anyway, it's a sweet romance with some appalling background information about the treatment of orphans in the poor house.

Bold proclamation

(5 Sterne)

I didn't know that "Pansy" was the aunt of Grace Livingston Hill. Their writing styles are quite similar. The story is a bold proclamation of Christian faith and an invitation to the reader, and it's entertaining, too. Thank you to TriciaG for reading this book!

Maybe the best

(5 Sterne)

I've read many Pansy books, but this one is exceptional. It touches on so many human states and emotions that touch many lives and situations.

Beautiful Story

(5 Sterne)

It is a beautiful story of God's care of an orphan boy Winter and his friend Vine who were suddenly separated.

Love all her books! So much fun to listen to and I love her focus on Christ!

Inspiring story

(4.5 Sterne)

It's a good story but also gives much food for thought, well read too.
