The Indian Cookery Book

(4.8 stars; 2 reviews)

An interesting, original and first hand collection of recipes! Although the writer has recorded them while in India, mostly Bengal, the recipes are not confined to this country alone.
What's interesting is the writer's record of weights, measures and the seasonal local produce based on which meals were planned (this is still a major factor in the lives of many who revel in this exercise in most parts of the country).
The last few chapters are gems which share many useful remedies and tips. (Summary by dc ) (6 hr 6 min)

What an interesting cookbook: a marriage between 'Stately British Homes' and the spices, fruits and variety of India. The chapter on 'made dishes' was straight out of English cookbooks of the time, but the chutneys and curries are wonderfully spiced and much more suited to a hot climate than a heavy roast or boiled beef. Even the medicines and household hints are refreshingly non-toxic; there's only one mention of "sugar of lead" and another of Spanish Fly--please avoid those. The narrator has an entirely appropriate (and lilting) Indian accent, and she is very pleasant to listen to.
