Stephen Graham, a Brit with Russian language skills, traveled by sea in 1913 with a group of poor Russian and other Slavic immigrants to New York, then cross-country with part of them by foot as far as Chicago. This is a narrative of their experiences. It is also filled with Graham's observations and reflections about American life and American views on a wide range of topics.
