The author lived from 1896 until 1973 and was a member of the Beachcombers Artists Club based in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He delighted in exposing young readers to watercolor illustrations provided by members of the club. Johnson and his wife, Laura (1892-1988), were the original publishers of The Cape Codder newspaper.
