The Great Gildersleeve

Fire Engine Committee

English · Radio, Humor

Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, the pompous but good-hearted head of the household in Summerfield, is at the center of this classic radio comedy. His efforts to manage family life and take part in the affairs of his community often bring out the gap between his grand opinions and the complications of everyday life.

The program follows Gildersleeve through domestic and civic situations, with his family and neighbors adding to the lively small-town world around him. In this episode, the title points to a committee concerned with a fire engine, bringing community business into the mix of Gildersleeve’s familiar comic troubles.

Warm, character-driven humor and the contrast between Gildersleeve’s self-importance and his underlying decency give the series its appeal. Its gentle comedy makes Summerfield feel like a place listeners can settle into, where even an ordinary local concern can become an occasion for spirited conversation and mishap.
