The Damon Runyon Theatre
A Nice Price
par
The Damon Runyon Theatre brings the colorful world of New York’s Broadway underworld to radio, drawing on the stories of Damon Runyon. Its characters include gamblers, hustlers, show people, and other streetwise figures, rendered in Runyon’s distinctive slang and lively, knowing voice.
Each broadcast presents a self-contained dramatic story, with narration and a cast bringing the characters and their schemes to life. The tales often turn on chance, loyalty, romance, or a clever maneuver, as people navigate the crowded world of Broadway and its surrounding neighborhoods.
The series blends crime-story tension with comedy and affection for its eccentric characters. Runyon’s rhythmic language gives the dialogue a distinctive sound, while the dramatic performances make the stories feel like vivid encounters with a bustling, unpredictable city.
