The Professor
Charlotte Brontë
Gelesen von LibriVox Volunteers
The Professor follows the journey of William Crimsworth, a young man navigating the complexities of ambition, love, and self-discovery in 19th-century England. After leaving his unfulfilling job in a mercantile office, William seeks a new path as he becomes a teacher at an all-girls school in Belgium.
As he immerses himself in the world of education, William grapples with his feelings for two very different women, each representing distinct aspects of his desires and aspirations. Through his experiences, Brontë explores themes of gender, class, and the pursuit of personal fulfillment, all set against the backdrop of a changing society.
With its rich character development and insightful commentary on societal norms, The Professor offers a unique perspective on the struggles of a man striving to carve out his identity in a world that often limits his choices. This lesser-known work by Charlotte Brontë provides a fascinating glimpse into her literary exploration of the human condition.

Worthwhile

This is sort of a coming-of-age story, mostly detailing the years 18-20 of a man's life. He narrates as he makes his way through life, fighting to maintain his integrity and gain success. It is interesting to see the different people (obstacles!) he comes into contact w/. No action, but if you like to examine interesting personalities or behaviors, or appreciate ideals and virtues, you may like this bird. One of the readers is rough to get through, but it's worth it.

Martin Geeson's enunciation of both French and English was a pleasure to listen to, and I found his reading of the text thoroughly enjoyable. It is a pity he didn't read the entire text, because the other readers, I'm afraid, really butchered the reading through their poor enunciation. I cringed at some of the pronunciations I heard from those readers
Lengthy but enjoyable

I'm glad I stuck with the book until I got past the first reader... Just could not understand her.
very enjoyable

when i think about how this book was rejected by publishers, i can only think it’s because it’s such a steady tale. Crimsworth never really suffers or gets into any trouble at all. whatever minor pickles he’s in are smoothed over with a bit of industry. it’s a very calm and pleasant read, though i’m not sure i’m a fan of his opinions on the natural subjugation of a wife. quite a nice, short cosy story of a young man making his own way in the world the readers were in general very good

Good book but not impressive

The best of all narrators in this book was Bereni, unfortunately she narrates only two chapters..

Some of the narrators are very difficult to understand, but the story stands for itself. Wonderful book!
