Emily Brontë's only novel, published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and many around them.

Now considered a classic of English literature, Wuthering Heights met with mixed reviews by critics when it first appeared, with many horrified by the stark depictions of mental and physical cruelty. Though Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre was originally considered the best of the Brontë sisters' works, many subsequent critics of Wuthering Heights argued that its originality and achievement made it superior. I have read the book, Wuthering Heights before. I have seen two film adaptations. This audio version of the book, read by Ruth Golding, is by far the most profound experience I have had with this story. The reading was absolutely perfect. Ms. Golding was able to render the complexities of the characters in a way I had never experienced. I was drawn into the narrative as I tried to understand these complex characters. As the last chapter ended, I felt bereft of the company of the people in this book, and it grieved me. This book, and this audio version in particular, has my unreserved recommendation.

First of all Wuthering Heights is a great piece of literature and I can't recommend it enough. Ruth Golding definitely did justice to it and read it excellently with enough animation to distinguish characters and not sound silly. I began listening to the audio book as I was painting, and before I knew it I was half way through the book. This is the my first audio book and I thought I wouldn't find it as pleasurable as reading, but I couldn't be more wrong. I think I'm going to give Far from the Madding Crowd a go now.

The story isn't delightful though it is intriguing. It's a strange, twisted love triangle fraught with selfishness, revenge, and most other human follies--and yet it makes fascinating reading. Ruth Holding is a treasure! We are very fortunate to have her volunteer her talents for a free reading like this one!

An amazing book. Ms Ruth Golding makes a very good effort to read the book well. Her diction is clear and she does pretty well with providing accents and voices to the characters. I have enjoyed listening to this recording. Thank you, Ms Golding, for taking the time to make this recording.

Utterly enthralling

I spent my high school and college lit career studiously avoiding the Bronte sisters’ work because at the time I absolutely detested this genre of literature, and didn’t want to read about subjugated chattel-women who were relegated to pining away over men, which was my take on it at the time. So reading/listening to this book for the first time as a middle-aged woman, I have to say it’s an absolutely fascinating take on the timelessness of bad human behavior. I haven’t finished it yet, but I can’t stop listening. And while I still think I would have hated Wuthering Heights had I read it earlier in my life, my literary criticism training and the patience and tolerance for human folly I’ve earned with my years allow me to appreciate not only the story itself but the framework of it. It’s also helping me be a bit less critical of my contemporary citizens—people have been ornery since time immemorial, ha! Also, Ruth Golding is a veritable gem of a reader. You’d be hard-pressed to find a paid narrator with her talent. I’ll be checking to see what other works she narrates, both on LibriVox and on my paid audiobook apps.

An haunting tale, superbly read

An excellent rendition of a classic gothic tale. I first read this book as a teenager and was completely swept away by the romance between Cathy and Heathcliff. Their relationship seemed an expression of deep and enduring love, and Heathcliff in my eyes, was the epitome of the tall, dark and handsome antihero. Listening to the story again in my mid-forties, I am now struck by how toxic and abusive it really was. Heathcliff's behaviour to others is appalling, often bordering on sadistic. It is a disturbing profile and exploration of mad obsession. Any romantic notions I once felt, have very quickly evaporated! Nevertheless the story is so masterfully written; so dark, strange and evocative, you can't help but be gripped. It's no wonder these doomed lovers haunt us still to this day

For many years I avoided Wuthering Heights, too in love with Jane Eyre by Emily Bronte’s sister to break its spell. I had an idea this was a soap opera of a novel, and so it is! But in the best way possible. The story is full of misery and tragedy, and I listened on, in dread of Catherine’s mania and Heathcliff’s next revolting deed. The reader brings out the humanity of the characters, giving each a distinct voice and attitude. This is an excellent version!

I can't understand how this book became so well liked. I hated every character in the book! The only reason I trudged through it was because I wanted to see if somebody had bumped him off. It was a good thing I was listening to it rather then sitting there reading. I would of felt like I had wasted a huge amount of time. I do have to say the narrator did a great job and it was easy to distinguish which wretch was which.
