Following the Equator: A Journey Around the World
Mark Twain
Leído por John Greenman

Following the Equator (American English title) or More Tramps Abroad (English title) is a non-fiction travelogue published by American author Mark Twain in 1897.
Twain was practically bankrupt in 1894 due to a failed investment into a "revolutionary" typesetting machine. In an attempt to extricate himself from debt of $100,000 (equivalent of about $2 million in 2005) he undertook a tour of the British Empire in 1895, a route chosen to provide numerous opportunities for lectures in the English language.
In Following the Equator, an account of that travel published in 1897, the author unmasks and criticizes racism, imperialism and missionary zeal in observations woven into the narrative with classical Twain wit.
Of particular interest, historically, are Twain's references to Cecil Rhodes in Australia and South Africa, the in-depth description of "Thugs" and "Thuggee" in India and the Boer War period and diamonds in South Africa. (Summary by Wikipedia and John Greenman) (20 hr 14 min)

One of the most entertaining stories I've ever read / listen to.

Seven Archers
I had forgotten how entertaining Mark Twain could be. I hadn't really read any of his works since I was a child growing up in part of his old stomping grounds in the Gold Country of Northern California. How refreshing and entertaining to be reacquainted. Mr Greenman did such an excellent job of reading that you imagined you were listening to Mr. Clemens himself. probably one of the best readers I've heard to date on LibriVox. Thank you John Greenman for doing such an excellent job!
Wow. No wonder Mark Twain is so celebrated.

Informative, entertaining and humorous. John Greenman is simply awesome. His performance is not only flawless, but he is absolutely perfect for Twain books. I never knew Mark Twain, of course, but I have no doubt that he sounded exactly like Greenman. Thank you misters Twain and Greenman!
Splendid, inspired reading.

Brilliantly read by Mr Greenman. The book is packed with history but with an interestingly modern liberal interpretation. Cecil Rhodes comes in for a pretty brutal beating; something that the woke, particularly young Americans have revived today .
It's really history.
