Mr. Trunnell, Mate of the Ship 'Pirate'

(4.6 stars; 244 reviews)

This is the tale of a perilous voyage aboard a clipper ship told by the second mate. He looks up to Trunnell, the first mate, who somehow manages to hold things together between a murdering former captain, a captain who may not actually be a captain, and a crew inclined to mutiny. This all leads to a surprising and satisfying ending.

The author, Hains, wrote frequently of the sea. He is the author who (under a pen name) had a story on the newsstands about a liner hitting an iceberg and sinking, while Titanic was doing precisely that! (Summary by Mark F. Smith) (6 hr 36 min)

Great story, better than expected. Mark F Smith is once again excellent in bringing the characters to life. Having listened to a few of his presentations, i find myself looking for books that he narrated.

read very well, story kept my interest.

Interesting story

(4 stars)

This story is told from the perspective of the second mate of the ship "Pirate". Mr Trunnell is the first mate who appears to be a regular sailor but exhibits some serious power and a strong belief in discipline. Also aboard are the former captain - a sneaky fellow, and an odd looking third mate. Throw in a rescue attempt and a mutiny, and you have some high adventure, or mostly high adventure. The book does get a bit dry in some spots. Overall it is a good book. Reader is excellent.

PLEASANT SURPRISE

Like the other commentators, I knew not the author. But. he wove a very good tale. It was an extremely offbeat story, but interesting and well done. Mark Smith never fails us.

I especially like Mark Smith's voice reading the nautical descriptions. Pretty suspenseful story. Thank you.
