The Pagan Madonna
Harold Macgrath
Leído por Don W. Jenkins

The Pagan Madonna, one of Harold MacGrath's numerous novels, set in Shanghai, tells a story of intrigue, murder, and illicit art “collecting.” The paths of Jean Norman, a Red Cross nurse from the United States, Ling Foo, a shifty pawn shop keeper, and Anthony Cleigh, millionaire art collector, cross and recross in growing intrigue over a string of beads. It is a world where “. . . every move you make is governed by Chance--the Blind Madonna of the Pagan . . . .” (Introduction by Don Jenkins) (5 hr 42 min)

Exciting fun, compelling characters, good reader!

I'm only halfway through, so I shouldn't really be writing this, but I can't resist. This a fun listen. I'm having no trouble at all keeping characters straight- they're all clearly defined and distinct. I can't wait to find out what they'll do next! Everyone's actions seem not just believable, but rational according to their own lights. Great story so far! But here's why I really had to write. The narrator does a fine job! He's no professional, and his voice isn't particularly mellifluous, but he reads with an understanding of the meaning of the material, and pronounces all the words correctly! Maybe I've had a run of bad luck, but boy is this a more-than-welcome relief! I recently suffered through a narrator who hadn't a large vocabulary, and didn't bother to look words up. "Brusque" pronounced "brewski"? Really?! So thanks so much for a job excellently done!
Very clear reading.

I have a severe hearing loss; this is read so clearly that I could enjoy listening to it while doing a major dusting and rearranging project. I was pretty amazed by the reader's characterizations, also. The story is fun, interesting, and kept me engaged. Thank you.

Lots of potential but didn’t amount to much.
