Ramona (version 2)
Helen Hunt Jackson
Leído por Jacquerie
Set in Old California in the wake of the Mexican-American War, Ramona is two stories at once. It is the story of the love between a part-Native American orphan girl, Ramona, and Alessandro, a young Indian sheepherder. It is also the story of racial prejudice and the clash between cultures as California changes from a Spanish colony to an American territory. Ramona is the ward of Señora Gonzaga Moreno, who despises the girl for her race but honors the dying wish of the Señora's sister, Ramona's foster-mother, to raise her as her own. Señora Moreno embodies the aloof arrogance of Spanish nobility, hating both the Americans who dispute her claim to her vast rancho, and the Indians, whom she places in the same social class with slaves. Her only semblance of love is reserved for her son Felipe.
Despite the Señora's machinations, Ramona and Alessandro fall in love, and eventually elope. But their life together is not an easy one, as they roam the Southern California searching for a home. Their many hardships cannot dull their love for one another, but they soon take a toll that changes their lives forever. (Introduction by Christine Dufour) (16 hr 41 min)

Another Excelent Librivox Work
Donald Gilmore
Ms Jackson's tale about Ramona and her life after the Mexican war is very well written. Her command of the English language is extraordinary. She paints vivid pictures with her words. Given that, the work might have been a boring tone for modern audiences, had it not been for the fine reading of Christine Duford. As a Librivox reader, I have an idea of the struggle she had recording such a massive work. Kudos to Ms Duford. If you wish a better understanding of some of the wrongs done in the name of Fanifest Destiny, I would also recommend this book.

Es una hermosa historia, llena de sentido en la historia de Estados Unidos. A pesar de la profusión romántica y el sentimentalismo de algunas páginas, es una novela de gran interés. La lectura es excelente, inmejorable. Gracias

This book was an eye-opener. I really had no idea of this part of California’s history. It is powerfully written. And the reader was absolutely excellent.

A historical novel that every U.S. citizen - certainly those in California - should read.

I’ve listened to many, many titles here over the years. This soaring, epic novel is maybe the best I’ve listened to. The reader is perfect, handling all the nuances of the various characters. This book is a marvel for its time.
