The Precipice
Elia Wilkinson Peattie
Leído por Mary Schneider

Elia Peattie was an outspoken journalist and social activist who gave her attention to such areas as orphanages, charity hospitals, the Wounded Knee massacre, capital punishment, and the like. The Precipice is partially based on the life of her close friend Katherine Ostrander, a social work pioneer, and tells of the evolution of Kate Barrington after her college years and with it the evolution of society as a whole and women in particular in pre-World War I America. Friendship, romance, betrayal, searchings of the soul, dreams, and shattered hopes -- all the stuff of life -- bring Kate to full realization of her true self. Another stellar audio book from Librivox! Schools would be well advised to use this invaluable tool to educate our children! It will expand their knowledge of different times and viewpoints, yet timeless in its understanding of the human experience! If we teach our children how to think, we will bring ourselves closer to the superior education "elite's" children receive at their boarding schools! They teach the slave class how to obey and to accept the mind-numbing boredom of rote memorization of useless facts and fictions producing greater endurance in tolerating the mindless, repetitive physical motion inherant in factory assembly line work. Take heart, in the end; we win!

The reader is excellent although a bit monotone. This book is interesting and ends nicely. Some of the concepts are overly stated. I admire the heroine, who remains steadfast in her beliefs and her dedication to the marginalized.
