Mary Lennox is a spoiled, middle-class, self-centered child who has been recently orphaned. She is accepted into the quiet and remote country house of an uncle, who has almost completely withdrawn into himself after the death of his wife. Mary gradually becomes drawn into the hidden side of the house: why does she hear the crying of a unseen child? Why is there an overgrown, walled garden, its door long locked? I'd seen the movie so I knew I'd love the book, but I was delighted to realize the movie had quiet changed the book. Mrs. Medlock wasn't mean and you got to hear what the robin was thinking. Just a wonderful book this will be a favorite till I'm old an grey and reading it to my great grands ( I'm only 24 with a 9m old) :)

awesome!!!!!

I really like this book and I highly recommend it for young readers ages nine and older. I'm ten and love this audio book and the narrator has a great way of doing the accents of the characters in this wonderful story. Some parts could be confused by younger kids but overall this is a wonderful book.

deep joy and insight

What a pleasure it was to me diving deep into the first book I read by my own at age 8-back in 1990. That you for bringing it to life, in such a adorable, intimate way. Much love to all of you! 😊😀 Berlin, 2017

Beautiful story read beautifully

Loved this story - I had never read it as a child but saw the movie. Kara’s reading was great. Understated but effective. Her rendition of the children’s voices was sweet and her Yorkshire was well done.

I can’t remember for sure, but I think I read this book in middle school language arts class. I’m working my way through the 1000 Good Books list (John Senior) and at first glance of the list, this one peaked my interest. I listened to a great LibriVox recording of this! She even did the Yorkshire accents while narrating certain characters, which was cool to hear! This was a very quick “read” (only took 3 days), and for the most part, the story was engaging. I really enjoyed Mary’s transformation, but I could honestly care less about Colin. I loved the perspective Dickon brought to the story as a humble Yorkshire lad, in comparison to Mary and Colin who needed to be brought down to size. I would have enjoyed more chapters at the end when Mr. Craven comes home and witnesses his son’s transformation, rather than it ending a bit abruptly. 3 out of 5 stars.
