The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders

Defoe wrote this novel after his work as a journalist and pamphleteer. By 1722, Defoe had become recognized as a novelist, with the success of Robinson Crusoe in 1719. His political work was tapering off at this point, due to the fall of both Whig and Tory party leaders with whom he had been associated. - Defoe's Whig views are nevertheless evident in the story of Moll. The full title of the novel tells part of its story: "The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders, Etc. Who was born in Newgate, and during a life of continu'd Variety for Threescore Years, besides her Childhood, was Twelve Year a Whore, five times a Wife (whereof once to her own brother), Twelve Year a Thief, Eight Year a Transported Felon in Virginia, at last grew Rich, liv'd Honest and died a Penitent. Written from her own Memorandums." (Summary from Wikipedia) (13 hr 31 min)

If you don't like someone's voice then why don't you volunteer to read it?! or why not be a good community member and send Jemma Blythe some medicinal over the counter throat spray? This is a free service, and all volunteers read for free. Volunteering is a precious and time consuming thing, have some respect and gratefulness for it. You can always but it from the internet anywhere from 15usd and upwards. many of us can't afford to pay for audiobooks.

a great book

This is a very entertaining tale. I enjoyed it. I disagree with the other reviewers. The reader they mention does sound a bit out of place early on when the character is a young woman but it quite works later in the book. This recording is wholly understandable and I had no problem hearing what was said. I recommend this book. Enjoy and thank you to the volunteers who read this!

A great classic!

GREAT BOOK

(5 stars)

After struggling through the two boring Robinson Crusoe books, this one shows that Defoe really could write. As for the flack about the readers, I submit that Jemma Blythe was the perfect voice for the aged heroine. I wish that she had read the entire book. This should not be taken as criticism of the other readers because most were very good.

Great book, but some readers better than others.

Great book, but some readers better than others. Occasionally difficult to listen to.

An interesting story.
