The Shrieking Pit
Arthur J. Rees
Read by Kevin Green
The Shrieking Pit is one of Arthur Rees's earlier works, and is a good old fashioned murder mystery story. Grant Colwyn, a private detective, is holidaying in East Anglia when he notices a young man at a nearby table behaving peculiarly. The young man later leaves the hotel without paying his bill, and turns up in a nearby hamlet in the Norfolk marshes where he takes lodgings at the village inn. The next day, another guest at the inn is found dead, and the young man is missing. Can Colwyn sort out the mystery and prove the young man's innocence one way or the the other? Good one!

Normally I have trouble following an extremely detailed mystery like this one, but the author does a great job of making everything clear, repeating the points until he drove them home, and keeping the listener/reader in the loop. It is very well narrated, and a riveting story that keeps you guessing until the end. Speaking of the end, that was my only complaint. It ends very abruptly. Everything is spelled out, but it leaves you feeling like the story just comes to a screeching halt. But don’t let that deter you from listening. It is definitely a worthwhile adventure!

I absolutely love this end to end. The reader made excellent work off the reading and the text was also great production. I am quite a fan of that part of Norfolk and I thought this book brought it beautifully to life. I found some wonderful characters and beautifully described scenery. I must take another trip back out East soon! Spoiler alert - I note some reviewers comment that they had guessed the killer early on only to have a bait and switch at the last minute which annoyed them. That’s part of the style of this novel. Also, I had actually guessed the real killer. :)
Excellent Reader--Eric Greene

The story itself was quite good, but Eric's ability to give each character a different voice and to quickly change between character/ voices is amazing. It makes the story much more interesting than just straightforward reading in the same voice. He even makes the females sound like real women! My only complaint is the ending. I thought I knew who it the culprit would be from early on. And I felt disappointed that the author probably knew most people would deduce the same, and so he decide towards the end to make it someone else. It felt lame to me.

First I’ve got to say that this long book is almost pure dialogue, the speakers are 98% male. But Kevin Green avoids monotony with just his voices to keep things clear for the listener. The complicated story fascinates. It’s about how to determine what’s true. The jumper to conclusions always has his impressive reasons, but of course, he turns out to be wrong. It’s an absorbing story.
Excellent mystery story

The summary covers the plot. This story has a number of mysteries in it, and weaves them together nicely. Who is the mysterious young man? Why would he refuse to defend himself? Can our hero save him from the gallows? Kevin does a wonderful job with the recordings. Thank you!
