Edgar Allan Poe has the ability to manipulate language so well that he could engage my imagination and get me terrified even though little was 'done' in the sense of horrible actions described. My imagination, under the power of his creepy words, conjured the atmosphere and did the rest by itself. In this recording I've chosen some of his stories that succeed so well in leaving lingering hair raising memories with me: The Telltale Heart; The Masque of the Red Death; The Black Cat; The Raven, the Casque of Amontillado and Berenice. easily drowned out

Maybe it's because I have ADHD but I couldn't focus on this narrator at all. I would easily think about other things and be lost as to what was happening in the story. I listened to the first 3 short stories then had to stop. Also some of his pronunciation and his cadence drove me nuts. I can see how some might like it but his emphasis and excitement seemed misplaced that could have been focused better elsewhere.

Five stars to the narrator! So fitting to the story. I love his emotions, the way he pronounce and read is amazing. Overall this is indeed a great book. My issue is me having troubles with some of the stories. They seem to be hard to understand and needs more concentration and maybe repeating the story again and again. My favourite is Telltale heart and Black Cat. My full review will be on goodreads.

I think Phil chenevert could read a phone book and it would come out just as eloquently done. the story is here by Edgar Allan Poe are very scary but Phil seems to give it a somewhat comical atmosphere with the inflection of his voice and pronunciation of certain words. I find this draws my attention to the story and holds me there

I’m new to the app and I’ve been listening to many readers who were hard to understand or voices weren’t equipped enough to hook the readers in and engage. This is my favourite reader as he has a soothing voice, is enthusiastic when necessary and really easy to understand and listen to.

style of reading makes it hard to follow the story

The reader puts a lot of effort in 'melodic' and somewhat theatrical delivery. Even though I find this to be very distracting when done well, it makes it very difficult to follow the stories by this reader. The intonations, melody, and theatrical additions are not in line with the content of the story itself or even with the punctuation of the text. It sounds like a collection of extremes of intonation, sighs, pauses, etc. are randomly thrown into the reading, with no regard wether it's fitting for the punctuation of the sentiment the story or particular sentence is trying to convey. As a result, it's very hard work for the listener to work through all this 'clutter' and make out the course of the story from all of this. Even when you are already familiar with the story. It also makes me wonder if the reader actually understands what they are reading or are just dramatically reciting a string of words they see in the text before them. Two stars because there are readers who have this same problem but make it even worse than here, but all in all I'm not going to continue with this reader because it's just too exhausting to listen to. Maybe it's an American thing and that's why others leave positive reviews for this reader, but if you prefer calm reading with technical quality, where punctuation and intonation serve the story rather than the reader looking for an audience for their personal exposure, the story being just a means to this end, I recommend a skip and looking for a more balanced style of reading.

Every school student of 14 years old or more should be REQUIRED to read Poe. There is dark humor in his writing all the way to creepy horror. yes, humor and horror both. The cantor and beauty of the writing and the detailed imagery it evokes is the hallmark of this master of American Literary History.

it's ok I had a speaker read these stories to me in middle school, I'm 33 now and still can't get his ability to make you feel in the story. The version here is a little boring and just a guy reading not actually making me believe he was in the story.

This reader is a genius and his sounds exactly like Heath Ledgers Joker! Am I the only one who recognized that voice? When I first heard his Joker-like voice saying the words “I am not mad” it brought the highest satisfaction to my ears and my brain.
