This delightful story begins in a little town called Marshmallows, where a young man, the new vicar, Harry Walton, has just arrived. As he begins his work Harry realizes that everything is not quite 'right' in his little parish and it all seems to center around Oldcastle Hall. As he wins the affection of the people secrets begin to unfold, and Harry Walton attempts to free them from guilt of the past, help them overcome pride and while he is at it, he falls in love with a woman whose past is the most mysterious yet, and whose tyrannical mother is the mistress of Oldcastle Hall.
This Is a wonderful, heartwarming romance and a unique mystery, told from the viewpoint of the young vicar. (Summary by Fiddlesticks )

George McDonald I need say no more... except that I wish he had

A LibriVox Listener
A beautiful book

SimonBiggs
It is initially made a little hard to get used to many voices reading the one narration, but by the end one certainly sinks into it. Many a moment a tear needed to be wiped away, many a moment his life described cast a needed shining light on where my path needed to adjust. Thank you George, and thank you readers for bringing me this.
Refreshing

Phxjennifer
It starts slowly, but pulls the listener in with gentle grace as well as interesting characters and suspense. Fans of "Pansy" and Grace Livingston Hill will be particularly attracted to this book, but it's much more than a romance. The author has much to say to anyone concerned with living a God-centered life.
Annals of a Quiet Neighbourhood

Terri
I love the way the truth of God's word is woven in the story. Very interesting hearing in 1st person.
The Title Doesn't Do It Justice

Mrs. VLB
I am only a few hours into this marvelous book but I already can't wait to finish it so I can listen to it again (a very, very rare occurrence). I have thoroughly enjoyed George MacDonald's books but to me this is his best. I think the title is misleading and some may pass it by because it doesn't sound very exciting. Sadly, they would be missing a masterpiece.
Truth loved

Lee-Anne Todd
as with all George McDonald stories both adult and children's and for all the genres he writes in, he continues to encourage us to thought and belief in our loving Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus Christ our saviour Who is The True way to life and relationship both here and the hereafter. some readers are not easy to listen to
A bit boring

Jane
The story is full of religious reflexions, sometimes too long. The main plot line is often interrupted by other characters' lines (which were less interesting for me). But still it is a good old English story, quiet and calming.
Great book and narration

Jonas Herum
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The truth is illuminated through out by Macdonald's great words. thanks to all the readers. a couple chapters were a little harder to hear but other than that, it was perfect.
