Sniwed in Again

The reader is excellent but the story is hardly uplifting. The handsome young hero (?) is the son of an impoverished English lord who encourages him to go to China, plunder a temple of the sacred icons of the title, and bring them back to be sold, saving the estate. Everyone from the lord's relatives to the sweet young heroine (?) to the local police to the villagers of the country seat think that's just fine. When the only person who mildly objects to this sacrilegious and bloody robbery is found shot in the head, everyone does every thing possible to see that the culprit is never found. Difficult to sympathize with the characters.
