Grey's story of the struggles to build the Union Pacific Railroad in the late 1860's. Typical western characters, but placed in a factual setting. His first real attempt at historical fiction. "The most kidnapped woman in the west" I read this comment once. I looked for this book and for this comment for a few years. I had read it once and found myself intoxicated by the romance. I was afraid I would never find it again. but lady luck was on my side. what a thumping good story, and reader thanks to all involved

Good story w dramatic sweep.

Drama of vast struggle between peoples, motivations, & geography to connect both ends of US. The description was necessarily long because no pictures. Reader very good except for inconsistency of volume.

Excellent Reading

My mother who only passed away 5 years ago, used to read herself to sleep every night with an inspirational book, but more often with a Zane Gray novel resting upon her bosom when she awoke. It would have delighted her to have been able to listen to Librivox and your excellent reading of this very good novel. I am sure it would have been used by her as it is by me to forget the troubles of the day and the news of a world she could no longer be sure of for the family she loved so well. I want to thank the reader and all Librivox volunteers for the kindness and generosity which they so often give to others as to me. God bless the reader for the understanding manner in which he read of this interesting writer who loved our country's great West as much as I believe I do myself. Thanks so much.

Don’t miss this audiobook!

The best yet. Historical fiction is his true strength.

well read, some changes in recording level but did not effect listening experience . Good consistent character voices. the tale itself is the basis for the fairly recent 'Hell on wheels' series. in his attempt to write the ultimate western classic that contains all human life, Zain has bitten off a bit more than he can chew. This book would have benefited from some severe editing to avoid repetition and keep the narrative going. The men are still men and the women still totally passive actors whoes destiny is defined by the ability of a good man to use violence to achieve his ends.... The main character Neal needs one of his good friends to give him a slap and tell him to get over it, which is what would have happened rather than this cheese - packed love fest. It's still great.

Too long too little action, reader's voice too quiet at times

Narrator Inconsistentent Great Story

(4 stars)

The narrator needs to stop moving away from the microphone or whatever they are doing. Sit still keeping mouth at same distance from microphone. Sometimes blasting and echoing and a few minutes later barely audible. The constant need to adhist volume is very distracting. And it happened many times. Great voices for characters though. As for the story, several ridiculous coincidences during Alley's fleeing. I wont spoil it but author cheapens the book with a storyline that devolves into such unrealism. Louis L'Amour pulled the same thing in their books. Why is that necessary? Otherwise a great history of the railroad, great characters, great story. Narrator, not so good.
